A Very "Unwedding" Story

Sorry this is a day late.  We got caught up in creating some fabulous food for a retirement party for a professor at George Washington University's School of Engineering and Applied Science.  If you ever need anything, just give us a call.  Now on to our story of the week.
We make some beautiful and elegant wedding cakes, but those stories are always plentiful.  So we thought you would enjoy this very “UNWEDDING” story.  We always have fun and a good sense of humor, which are the keys to our sunny dispositions!  About two years ago, we stumbled into unchartered waters - we had a client who wanted to celebrate the finalization of her girlfriend’s divorce that evening.  The client brought in some stereotypical designs of blood, gore, and knives.  We have a cardinal rule at the bakery, nothing too vulgar – so how could we say no to that challenge.
This just happened a few days after Valentine’s Day, so we had to transform from hearts, kisses, and everlasting love to broken love.  Victoria’s mind was brainstorming and came upon the miniature silver platters and a broken wedding cake topper that was missing the groom’s head…..  Wasn’t that convenient?  After a fun brainstorming session with Emily and some other female colleagues, the cake was born.  To make the story even better, we decided that Luis, our sole male at the bakery that day, should be given the honor of creating the final masterpiece!
So, enjoy the fruits of our labor, have a good laugh and take in the details on this cake.  We have the property division line, on which she can sail off into FREEDOM with beautiful palm trees while he can get toasted in the flames of you know where!  And at the very end, that broken cake topper made its appearance, with the groom’s head on a silver platter to top it all off.  The client loved the cake and was laughing as we told her not to shake the cake box too hard!
So if you want to make a statement with your dessert, call your team at Cakes by Happy Eatery.  Join us again next Tuesday for a new story.  In the mean time, visit us at www.CakesbyHappyEatery.com.  Mention our blog when you visit us through Friday, April 1 for a free cupcake!

Adventures of the Wu girls at Cakes by Happy Eatery

We had a fun and adventurous weekend.  We enjoyed the beautiful weather and the cakes were extremely creative.  We thought you would enjoy hearing about our hip 100 year old birthday girl!  This was for a family friend whose mother turned 100!  She is still quite independent, very outgoing, and loves to travel to visit family.

The birthday girl travelled to Virginia from Canada to celebrate this big occasion with close family and friends.  Victoria first met her about 10 years ago, and was delighted by this very young looking grandmother in leather pants!  So no ordinary cake would do for her 100th birthday celebration.  We knew she loves music, but where to next????

We decided on a fun topsy turvey design with bold colors to match her personality.  Red is a color of good luck for the Chinese, so that was a must.  We then marbled black and white fondant for the bottom and top tiers and added black musical notes.  We highlighted the middle tier in red with silhouettes of swing dancers.  We needed something else to tie in with the whimsical look, so Emily had to roll out over a hundred little balls of different sizes (Victoria was nowhere to be found for this task).  A few purses, lipstick and other fun glamorous items added the finishing touches.

We delivered the cake to Harvest Moon Restaurant and Lounge in Arlington, VA and added some fun spirals with black and red balls on the ends.  We enjoyed the devil’s food cake with rich chocolate buttercream on the bottom layer and vanilla sponge cake with custard and fresh strawberries on the top two tiers.

Join us next Tuesday for another story.  In the mean time, stop by either location to visit us for a bubble tea, or visit us at www.CakesbyHappyEatery.com

Hey, Hokies!

Adventures of the Wu Girls at Cakes by Happy Eatery Post 2!

I am sure all you Hokie fans out there will enjoy this next blog.  Our
staff is like family, so when they need a cake, they let us have some fun!
Last June one of our staff members graduated from Virginia Tech.  Jessica
is such a Hokie fan that she bought a VT-shaped cake pan for us to make
lots of graduation cakes.  So we couldn’t disappoint her for her big
graduation party.  She picked out the flavors and left the rest to us.
Now Victoria was holding down the Manassas kitchen for Jessica’s
graduation, and left the design up to me.  From my many years of living
with a big Hokie fan, my husband Ray, I knew the pressure was on to make a
fantastic cake.  I knew we had to make a cake in the VT pan Jessica gave
us, but what next??  Then it came to me, every Hokie knows their mascot,
so I decided to put on the Hokie bird with a graduation cap to mark this
occasion.
When I delivered the cake to the party and lifted the lid for Jessica, Ray
and Victoria, a big smile spread across their faces.  We were proud of our
Hokie graduate, and the one on the cake too!
Visit us next Tuesday for some more tales and good times.  Victoria should
be fully recovered from her jet lag after her trip to South Africa on
safari without any lion marks!  In the mean time, you can find us at

Adventures of the Wu girls at Cakes by Happy Eatery

Welcome to our inaugural blog!  We thought it would be fun to share some of our fascinating adventures we go through at our two bakeries.  Our original bakery was started by our parents in 1984, almost 27 years ago!  We have since expanded, and want to introduce ourselves.

Victoria, also known as “the BIG sister”, can usually be found at our Manassas location.  Emily, also known as “the little sister”, can usually be found at our Centreville location.  Victoria loves to get BIG ideas, then send them off to Emily to finalize.  We make a great team, but at times, Mom has to step in!

For one of our latest adventures, we would like to tell you about our cake for a huge baseball fan and member of the Nationals organization.  This cake was a gift from a friend and she wanted to highlight his love of the Nationals.  Victoria started brainstorming and came up with a baseball jersey, some baseballs and baseball diamond, all to be done with the Nationals logo and colors.  Emily added in a baseball cap and baseball bats to add a little more fun.  Each tier was made out of 100% cake, with only a few supports holding up each tier on the day of the event.  Making the cake was fun, but not the best part……

The birthday boy’s 50th birthday party was held at Thurgood Marshall Academy Public Charter High School in Washington, DC.  This was on Saturday, February 19, the evening in which we had extremely high winds.  Once we arrived at the school, we found out that the electricity went out due to the winds.  We figured, no problem – that is until we found out the party was down one hall, turn down the next hall, and up three flights of stairs!  If any of you know Victoria, you know she doesn’t leave home without her 3” heels, and this cake was over 70 pounds.  After a few pauses, and a lot of huffing, we finally made it to the table.

Join us for more fun and adventures every Tuesday morning.  Visit our website at www.CakesbyHappyEatery.com for more information about our cakes and thanks for visiting our blog!
